Is it Your Job to Protect Your Baby, during Pregnancy and Beyond?

Many pregnant people feel enormous pressure to make the "right" choices. In this video, I explore a different question: What if your role isn't to protect your baby from every possible risk, but to respond with care to what you and your baby need?

A Stress-filled Message...

If you're pregnant, you've probably absorbed a powerful message from our culture:

Your job is to protect your baby. At first glance, that sounds obvious. Of course you want to keep your baby safe. Of course you want to make good choices.

But for many pregnant people, especially those who are highly sensitive, neurodivergent, or prone to anxiety, the idea of "protecting" a baby can quietly become exhausting.

Suddenly every choice feels high stakes:

What food should I eat? What should I avoid? Should I choose an OB or midwife? Hospital or homebirth? What about taking my medication?

When your primary goal becomes protecting your baby from every possible risk, pregnancy can start to feel like an endless search for the right answer, creating more fear than confidence. And it definitely kills the joy.

A Different Question...

There's a saying in Access Consciousness®, "A question always empowers, and answer disempowers."

What if you take a breath, take a moment, and let go of trying to find the right answers to protect your baby? Instead, ask a different question:

What if pregnancy isn't primarily about protecting your baby?

What if it's about caring for your baby?

The difference may sound subtle, but the energy is worlds apart.

Protection often comes from fear. It can feel like bracing against danger, avoiding mistakes, and trying to control outcomes.

Care, on the other hand, invites responsiveness.

Instead of asking:

"What is the perfect choice?"

You might ask:

"What is required right now?"

"What would support my body?"

"What would support my baby?"

"What information feels relevant today?"

Notice how much more spacious those questions are. Notice the curiousity that comes up - and the tension that leaves.

Responding Instead of Perfecting

One of my favorite ways to think about responsibility is as the ability to respond.

Not carrying the weight of getting everything right. Not predicting every possible future outcome. Simply responding to what is needed in this moment.

Maybe your body needs protein.

Maybe it needs rest.

Maybe it needs movement.

Maybe it needs reassurance.

Maybe it needs support from someone who understands what you're going through. And what you or your body or your baby requires can change and flow, day by day (or even minute by minute!).

Please remember, you're not looking for answers...your opening up to awareness.

Pregnancy is not a test you pass by following every rule perfectly.

It's a relationship.

A relationship with your changing body, your growing baby, and yourself.

Trusting Yourself in Pregnancy

Many of the people I work with arrive feeling overwhelmed by information.

They've listened to podcasts, read books, scrolled forums, compared expert opinions, and ruminated over each choice until they are burning out.

And yet they still don't feel confident.

Why? Because information alone doesn't create trust.

Trust grows when you learn how to listen to yourself.

When you learn how to notice what feels true for you.

When you develop confidence in your ability to respond to challenges as they arise.

The goal isn't to know everything.

The goal is to build a relationship with yourself that allows you to navigate uncertainty with greater ease.

What Would Change?

Imagine approaching pregnancy not as a mission to prevent every possible mistake, but as an opportunity to care for yourself and your baby.

Imagine making decisions from curiosity instead of fear. Imagine asking, "What is required here?" instead of "What if I get this wrong?"

How much more peace of mind might be available?

How much more confidence?

How much more joy?

You don't have to figure everything out alone.

If you're navigating pregnancy anxiety, overwhelm, or decision fatigue, I'd love to help. Through Confidence in Pregnancy Coaching, I support sensitive and neurodivergent pregnant people in building self-trust, regulating their nervous systems, and moving through pregnancy with greater confidence and peace of mind.
